Gilgit, November 28: Traders in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan (PoGB) are raising alarms over the economic fallout caused by heavy snowfall at Khunjerab Pass, a critical link on the Karakoram Highway (KKH). The snow blockage has disrupted trade between Pakistan and China, highlighting both seasonal challenges and ongoing infrastructure shortcomings.
The Khunjerab Pass, perched at 4,693 meters (15,397 feet), serves as the highest point on the KKH and a vital trade artery under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This route facilitates the exchange of essential goods, including raw materials, electronics, and machinery. However, snow accumulation has blocked key sections of the highway, leaving traders and drivers stranded.
A trader lamented, “On the Chinese side, roads are clear, but here in Pakistan, the conditions are terrible. Driving trucks through the snow is becoming impossible.”
The prolonged closure has led to delayed shipments, supply shortages, and rising transportation costs. Industries reliant on time-sensitive deliveries are facing production halts, affecting businesses and consumers alike.
Another trader expressed frustration, saying, “Drivers are navigating through nearly a foot of snow with extreme caution. Accidents could have grave consequences, and yet no action has been taken to clear the roads.”
The situation is exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure on the Pakistani side of the pass. Unlike the Chinese side, where roads are well-maintained, the Pakistani stretch lacks fueling stations, maintenance facilities, and proper storage or warehouse options. This increases operational costs and further delays the transportation of goods.
The Khunjerab Pass is a lifeline for Pakistan’s economy, making the current disruption a critical issue. Traders are urging authorities to take immediate steps to clear the snow and improve infrastructure to ensure the smooth flow of trade.
The economic impact of these delays could have long-term repercussions if not addressed promptly, making it imperative for all stakeholders to act swiftly.
With both seasonal challenges and infrastructure deficits at play, the Khunjerab Pass snow disruption underscores the need for better preparedness to safeguard Pakistan’s trade and economy.
