Saudi Arabia Begins Construction On World’s Largest Structure: The Mukaab

Saudi Arabia has launched construction of The Mukaab, an immense cube-shaped building in Riyadh set to reach a towering 400 meters. Once completed, it could become the world’s largest structure, spanning an impressive two million square meters of floor space—20 times that of New York’s Empire State Building.

New Murabba District Plans

The Mukaab, estimated to cost $50 billion, will be the heart of a new urban area called New Murabba. This district will cover over 25 million square meters, including 104,000 planned residential units. The development aims to offer a mix of retail, office, and cultural spaces, positioning itself as a vibrant hub for both business and recreation.

A Vision of Luxury and Innovation

Designed to be a “premium hospitality destination,” The Mukaab will feature a central atrium, creating a unique experience for visitors and residents. With a multifaceted design catering to diverse sectors, the building is intended to attract both local and international guests. Construction oversight is being managed by Saudi Arabia’s New Murabba Development Company (NMDC), part of the nation’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), underscoring the Kingdom’s strategy to diversify its economy through innovative infrastructure.

Ambitious Architectural Legacy

Known for its record-breaking architecture, Saudi Arabia has previously pursued bold projects, including the Jeddah Tower, which was intended to be the world’s tallest building but remains unfinished. Another ambitious project, The Line—a mirrored city stretching across the desert—has recently been scaled back to 2.4 kilometers.

Innovation and Sustainability at the Core

The New Murabba district aims to “blend technology, innovation, and sustainability seamlessly.” The official site describes the project as a “center for progress, creativity, and entrepreneurship, harmonizing with nature and local culture.” The Mukaab is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, which focuses on fostering economic growth and sustainability through ambitious architectural endeavors.
