Elon Musk, leading a group of investors, has made an unsolicited offer of $97.4 billion to buy the nonprofit that controls OpenAI. His goal is to return OpenAI to its original mission of being an “open-source, safety-focused force for good.”
Altman’s Mocking Response
In response, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, mocked Musk’s offer. On X (formerly Twitter), he quipped, “No thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.” This comment was a jab at Musk’s $44 billion purchase of Twitter, which has since seen a decrease in value.
Musk Fires Back
Musk didn’t take the comment lightly and quickly responded. He called Altman a “Swindler” in the comments section. Furthermore, he shared a video of Altman with the caption “Scam Altman.”
The Feud Between Musk and Altman
The rivalry between Musk and Altman has been escalating for years. Although Musk co-founded OpenAI, he eventually became a critic of Altman’s leadership, accusing him of prioritizing profit over the ethical development of AI. The tension grew in 2023 when Musk launched his own AI startup, xAI, to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Additionally, in 2024, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI over its partnership with Microsoft.
Political Turn in 2025
Their feud took a significant political turn in 2025. Altman, alongside former President Donald Trump, announced Stargate, a $500 billion AI project. While Trump praised Altman’s leadership, Musk dismissed the project, labeling it financially dubious. Musk’s criticisms became more personal, further intensifying the AI power struggle, which now has both political and business implications.
