Hamas released Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage in Gaza, on Monday. The handover was done without ceremony, with Alexander being delivered to the Red Cross in Khan Younis and then handed over to Israeli forces.
He will undergo a preliminary examination at an Israeli army facility near the border town of Re’im before further procedures.
Trump Hails the Release
US President Donald Trump celebrated the news on Truth Social, writing, “Edan Alexander, the last living American hostage, is being released. Congratulations to his wonderful parents, family, and friends!”

Trump also spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he reaffirmed his support for Israel and its ongoing mission in Gaza.
Netanyahu: An ‘Emotional Moment’
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video message calling Alexander’s release a “very emotional moment.” He said the success came from a “winning combination” of Israeli military efforts and diplomatic pressure led by Trump.
The Israeli government also reiterated its promise to bring all hostages—dead or alive—back to the country, stressing it would continue its operations until all captives are freed.
Direct US-Hamas Talks Behind Release
According to reports, direct discussions between the United States and Hamas led to Alexander’s release. Israeli officials were reportedly unaware of the agreement until it was finalized.
In the first photo released after the handover, Alexander is seen standing with folded hands, surrounded by three armed Hamas members and a Red Cross worker.
US Ambassador Reacts
US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, echoed Trump’s sentiments on X, expressing hope that Alexander’s release “marks the beginning of the end to this terrible war.”
However, Huckabee also condemned Hamas, saying the group alone is responsible for the continued violence and suffering. He demanded the immediate release of all remaining hostages.
