Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday in Turkmenistan to discuss their growing cooperation in various sectors. Both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and political ties as their countries work together against Western sanctions and pressures.
During the meeting, both Putin and Pezeshkian hailed the robust and growing economic ties between Russia and Iran. According to reports, their discussions covered a broad range of projects, including gas sectors, road and rail construction, desalination, and energy-related industries such as petrochemicals and electricity.
Pezeshkian stated that the growing cooperation between the two countries “must be accelerated to strengthen these ties,” highlighting their commitment to bolstering joint efforts in the face of Western sanctions.
Russia and Iran are close to signing a strategic partnership agreement, a deal expected to be finalized at the upcoming BRICS summit in Russia. Pezeshkian expressed optimism about the agreement, underscoring its significance in countering Western sanctions.
Putin extended an official invitation for Pezeshkian to visit Russia, which was accepted, marking the continuation of their deepening alliance.
The growing partnership between Russia and Iran has raised concerns in the United States and Europe. The US has accused Iran of supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine, claims which Tehran denies. Both countries have been critical of Israel’s actions in the Middle East, further complicating their relationships with the West.
Putin, addressing the broader global context, stated that a new world order is emerging, characterized by multipolarity with new centers of economic and political influence. He emphasized that Russia is open to discussing this shift in various international forums, including BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Both Russia and Iran are positioning themselves as key players in this evolving world dynamic, further solidifying their partnership against Western dominance.
