Pope Francis strongly criticized former US President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policies, warning they could have severe consequences. In a letter to American bishops, the Pope expressed concern over the treatment of undocumented migrants and their dignity.
Mass Deportations ‘Will End Badly’
Addressing the ongoing immigration crisis, Pope Francis warned, “What is built on the basis of force and not on the truth about the equal dignity of every human being begins badly and will end badly.”
He emphasized that while countries have the right to protect their borders and ensure national security, deporting vulnerable individuals without considering their circumstances is unjust.
Migrant Rights and Human Dignity
The Pope has consistently championed the rights of migrants, advocating for their protection and integration into society. He pointed out that many migrants flee extreme poverty, violence, and environmental crises, making their forced removal particularly cruel.
“The act of deporting people who in many cases have left their own land for reasons of extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution, or serious deterioration of the environment, damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families,” he wrote.
Balancing Security and Compassion
While acknowledging the need for security measures, Francis stressed that migrants should not be criminalized solely based on their undocumented status. He urged governments to adopt immigration policies that are both lawful and humane.
White House Defends Crackdown
Despite criticism, the Trump administration defended its immigration enforcement efforts. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that over 8,000 undocumented individuals had been arrested since Trump’s presidency began.
