Peru’s Ministry of Economy revealed on Monday that it plans to seek a high-level summit with China and Brazil to step up efforts on a planned bi-oceanic railway project.
In an official release, Economy Minister Raul Perez Reyes had recently met with China’s ambassador to Peru, who proposed that a summit between leaders of the countries may serve to provide a collective roadmap for the regional railway project.
The ambitious plan foresees a railroad from Brazil through South America to a new port on Peru’s Pacific shore. The strategic corridor would form a direct trade link between China and Brazil, avoiding usual maritime routes like the Panama Canal and the continent’s southernmost tip.
The planned railway is considered as an important step towards improving South America’s infrastructure and strengthening regional trade relationships, specifically with China, one of the region’s biggest trading partners.
