Pam Bondi was officially sworn in as US Attorney General on Wednesday. It was a momentous moment for the Justice Department, President Donald Trump is reshaping the agency, one that has long been at odds with him. Pam Bondi became the fourth member of the president’s second-term Cabinet to be sworn into office, and it was the first swearing-in which Donald Trump himself conducted. This move signals a deep involvement on the part of Trump in the Justice Department, especially given its role in the investigations during his first term and the legal challenges that followed.

Before being sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Trump praised the work done by Bondi during her time as a prosecutor, and he underscored the latter’s aim to end weaponization of federal law enforcement. Florida’s first female attorney general, Bondi vowed to restore integrity to the department and to confront violent crime across both lines, domestic and international.

Bondi was confirmed by the Senate in a vote of 54-46, mostly along party lines. The Republicans have commended Bondi for her efforts in Florida, particularly in combating human trafficking and opioids. For many, the appointment is a reform opportunity in light of investigations into Trump and his supporters, which Republicans believe were politically motivated.

As the Attorney General, Bondi will supervise the FBI whose investigations related to President Trump are currently mired in controversy. The Department of Justice’s request for the names of agents associated with the January 6th investigation has created worries that the FBI might subject many of its officers to mass firings.

The appointment of the close associate, Bondi is expected to scrutinize intensely especially due to closeness with Donald Trump and how she had commentated on political issues in DOJ in relation to matters of this president. “She has argued that politics doesn’t play in her decisions: however, had shown sympathy regarding Trump’s allegation of political persecutions.
