Nepal Celebrates Chhath: A Festival Of Gratitude To The Sun God

Chitwan [Nepal], November 7: The banks of the Narayani River in Nepal came alive as devotees marked the third day of Chhath, a festival dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God. The occasion saw worshippers offering delicacies to the setting sun, standing in the river’s current as a symbol of devotion.

The Rituals and Significance of Chhath

Chhath is a four-day festival observed during Karthik Shukla Chaturthi to Shukla Saptami according to the lunar calendar. Devotees fast, abstain from drinking water, and prepare offerings, including traditional sweets like Thekuwa, Khajuri, and Kasar, along with fruits and dry fruits in a ceremonial basket known as “Dhakri.”

Sunita Sah, a fasting devotee, explained,The first day is Naha Khaya, marked by sacred meals. The second, Kharana, includes porridge offerings to Chhathi Maiya. On the third day, we offer delicacies to the goddess and the setting sun, praying for family well-being.”

A Festival of Family and Blessings

The Chhath festival holds deep significance for families, as devotees pray for the health, prosperity, and happiness of their loved ones. It is also believed that the fasting and prayers can fulfill personal wishes, such as blessing couples with children.

Meena Devi Sah, another devotee, shared, “Chhathi Maiya blesses those who undertake this fast with their deepest desires, from personal happiness to family prosperity.”

Expanding Traditions

Traditionally celebrated in Nepal’s southern plains, especially the Mithilanchal region, Chhath has gained popularity in the hilly areas since the restoration of democracy in 1990.

The festival concludes with the offering of Arghya to the rising sun, symbolizing new beginnings and continued blessings for all family members.

Conclusion

Chhath is not just a religious festival but a celebration of unity, devotion, and the timeless bond between humans and nature. Through their rituals, devotees seek the Sun God’s blessings for a harmonious and prosperous life.
