A devastating road accident in Mexico claimed the lives of 38 people over the weekend when a truck collided head-on with a passenger bus. Authorities confirmed the death toll on Tuesday, marking the first official count of the fatalities from the crash that occurred in the southeastern state of Campeche.
According to Jackson Villacis, a state prosecutor, 36 of the deceased were passengers on the bus, while two were in the truck. However, relatives of victims have alleged that four additional bodies have yet to be recovered.
Vehicles Caught Fire After Impact
The accident took place on Saturday when the truck veered into the oncoming lane, crashing directly into the bus. The impact was so severe that both vehicles caught fire, reducing them to charred remains. Harrowing footage shared on social media showed flames engulfing the wreckage as survivors screamed for help.
Authorities reported that only nine people managed to survive the accident. The bus had departed from Tabasco state and was en route to Cancun, a popular beach resort city.
Growing Concerns Over Road Safety
This incident highlights the increasing number of road accidents in Mexico involving large trucks. Poor vehicle maintenance, reckless driving, and overworked drivers have contributed to the rise in such tragic incidents.
In a separate but equally horrific incident, a bus crash in Guatemala on Monday resulted in 54 deaths when the vehicle plunged into a ravine. Authorities later revised the initial toll, lowering it by one fatality.
The recent crashes underscore the urgent need for improved road safety regulations and stricter enforcement to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
