Mexico and Canada Push Back Against Trump’s 25% Tariffs

The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has publicly denounced the proposed policy of U.S. President Donald Trump, by imposing 25% tariffs on all goods Mexico imports into the United States. On her page X, the detailed post referred to by Sheinbaum negates Trump’s false declaration that Mexico supports criminal organizations, when in fact, it is the U.S. itself supplies weapons to these groups.

Sheinbaum’s Firm Stance

“We categorically reject the slanders from the White House against the Mexican government over alliances with criminal organizations and any intention of intervention in our territory. If there’s any alliance anywhere, it is in the armories of the United States, which sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups,” Sheinbaum tweets.

She strengthened the cooperation between the two states in overcoming crime and drug trafficking but firmly rejected any form of subordination. “Coordination, yes; subordination, no,” she asserted.

Mexico’s Response Plan

Sheinbaum declared that in case the cooperative approach is not reached, Mexico is ready for actions. She said she instructed “the Secretary of Economy to implement Plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests. Nothing by force; everything by reason and right. ”

Canada Supports the Opposing Forces

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also pledged to retaliate against U.S. tariffs. He has engaged in discussions with Canadian Premiers and cabinet ministers and has spoken with Sheinbaum regarding a coordinated response.

“The United States has confirmed that it intends to apply 25% tariffs to most Canadian goods, 10% to energy, effective February 4. I have met with the Premiers and our Cabinet today and will be speaking with Mexican President Sheinbaum shortly. We never wanted this but we are ready. I will speak to Canadians this evening,” tweeted Trudeau.

Trudeau would host a press conference in detailing Ottawa’s reaction to the U.S. tariffs, yet further solidifying Canada’s preparedness to act against the economic retaliation measures.
