Las Cruces authorities are looking into a shooting that left several individuals injured Friday night at Young Park.
The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) reports that officers responded at approximately 10 p.m. upon receiving calls about gunshots. Upon arrival, paramedics found multiple victims with gunshot injuries. Most of them were taken to local hospitals, while others were sent to the University Medical Center in El Paso.
Dramatic Scene of Crowd Running in Panic
Witnesses reported that the shooting took place during a monthly event where auto enthusiasts display their customized sports cars. The event that attracted about 200 people turned into chaos soon when an argument blew into shooting.
One witness said she saw a man with an assault-style weapon, but police have not yet established any details regarding the shooter. As shots rang out, the crowd dispersed in panic, many leaving their cars and personal items behind in their haste to get away.
Authorities Search for Suspects and Motive
Police have not yet named any suspects or established a motive for the shooting. The New Mexico State Police, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are all aiding in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the number of victims or the extent of their injuries. In the meantime, KTSM-TV journalists on the scene interviewed a family that was worried their loved ones had been killed. Authorities have yet to confirm any deaths, though.
Investigation Continues as Community Awaits Answers
Local police are encouraging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward. While police seek to reconstruct what occurred, the Las Cruces community is in shock, struggling to come to terms with yet another episode of violence.
The authorities are set to disclose further information as the investigation continues.
