Italian Surf Coach Giulia Manfrini Died In Freak Swordfish Accident In Indonesia

In a tragic incident, 36-year-old Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini was fatally injured after being impaled by a swordfish while surfing in Indonesia. According to reports from ABC Australia, the accident occurred at a popular surf break off the West Coast of Sumatra, near Masokut Island, as Manfrini rode the waves at Ombak Bengbeng. Witnesses stated that the swordfish unexpectedly jumped and pierced her chest, resulting in a severe 5cm stab wound.

Manfrini was a well-respected surf coach and the founder of the surf travel agency AWAVE. Lahmudin Siregar, the acting head of the Mentawai Islands’ Disaster Management Agency, confirmed the details of the accident. Despite immediate first aid provided by two friends who were surfing nearby, she could not be saved and later showed signs of drowning, according to medical reports.

James Colston, Co-Founder of AWAVE Travel, expressed his grief, stating that Manfrini had made a significant impact on the surfing community both in Europe and around the world. “Her kindness, care, and positivity were remembered by all that met her, and she will be dearly missed,” he shared.

Frankie Smithurst from Naga Laut Mentawai Blue described Manfrini as someone with “overflowing excitement for life,” noting that her vibrant spirit and huge heart would be remembered by all.

The mayor of Venaria Reale, Manfrini’s hometown, Fabio Giulivi, expressed the community’s sorrow over her untimely death in a heartfelt Facebook post. He reflected on her passion for surfing and her dedication to her travel agency, stating, “The news of her death has left us all in shock and makes us feel powerless in the face of such a devastating tragedy.”

Manfrini’s Instagram page has been inundated with emotional tributes from friends and community members. One user poignantly remarked, “The sea, that gave you so much, has taken your life. Rest in peace.” Her former volleyball coach shared memories of their last evening together, expressing deep sorrow and calling her “like my new Italian daughter,” emphasizing the lasting impact she had on those around her.
