In a highly tragic incident, 28-year-old Indian-American Kevin Patel was shot in Chicago’s Lincoln Park on Wednesday, April 16. Even though Patel was taken to the hospital in a rush, he died due to his injuries during treatment.
Chicago police said the shooting occurred at about 9:20 pm in the 800 block of West Lill Avenue. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office later identified the victim as Kevin Patel.
Garret Moores, a local resident, discovered Patel wounded in front of a neighbor’s residence soon after he heard the gunshot. “I heard a gunshot at 9:20 pm and went outside and he was lying on the ground,” Moores told the media.
Efforts to Save Kevin Patel
Moores moved quickly—calling 911, seeking medical assistance, and attempting to control the bleeding with towels. “Two other individuals assisted me, and he was breathing and conscious on the way to the hospital,” he said. Regrettably, Patel died while undergoing treatment at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Eyewitness Accounts and Investigation
Though the motive for the shooting is unknown, witnesses reported to police they saw a male and a female running from the scene on foot, eastbound. No suspects have been apprehended as of yet.
One woman, Clara, informed ABC7 Chicago she saw a package and a sweatshirt on the scene. “There was a sweatshirt on the ground within the crime scene,” she explained, describing the scene she witnessed before police blocked it off.
Officials Call for Public Cooperation
Timmy Knudsen, Chicago’s 43rd Ward Alderman, also called on residents with information to come forward. In a newsletter warning, he said, “This is just another reminder of the work we have in front of us as a City to fight violence. I’ve directed the 19th district to beef up patrols in the area, and in the coming summer, I will continue to pressure City Hall for the resources our Ward deserves.”
The case against Kevin Patel’s murder is ongoing.
