India and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership during high-level bilateral engagements in Washington, DC. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India’s External Affairs Minister, representing the Prime Minister as his Special Envoy, attended the inauguration of the US President on January 20, 2025.
During these engagements, both sides discussed a wide range of issues, including security, technology, and regional cooperation. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh highlighted these discussions while responding to questions raised in the Rajya Sabha by several members. Singh stated, “Both sides affirmed a shared commitment to strengthen the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the United States.”
No Formal Agreements Signed, But Dialogue Continues
Although no formal bilateral agreements were signed during the visit, the dialogue emphasized shared priorities and the ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation in key sectors. Discussions focused on critical and emerging technologies, defense cooperation, energy, education, and legal mobility.
Quad Foreign Ministers Reinforce Commitment to Regional Stability
A day after the bilateral meeting, the Quad Foreign Ministers convened in Washington, DC, on January 21, 2025, reaffirming their shared commitment to ensuring a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. Singh stated, “The Quad Foreign Ministers underlined their conviction that international law, economic opportunity, peace, stability, and security in all domains, including the maritime domain, underpin the development and prosperity of the peoples of the Indo-Pacific.”
Strong Opposition to Unilateral Actions
The ministers expressed strong opposition to any unilateral actions aimed at altering the status quo by force or coercion. They also explored opportunities for deeper collaboration in key areas such as maritime security, economic cooperation, and promoting resilient supply chains.
Next Quad Leaders’ Summit to be Hosted by India
The Quad partners agreed to advance their work in preparation for the next Quad Leaders’ Summit, which India is set to host in 2025. This summit will further strengthen regional cooperation and build on the momentum generated by recent engagements.
