The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, recently met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran. During the meeting, Grossi highlighted the importance of Iran’s full cooperation with the IAEA to ensure its nuclear program remains peaceful.
Taking to social media platform X, Grossi shared,
“Important to meet with Foreign Minister @araghchi during my timely visit to Iran. Cooperation with @IAEAorg is indispensable to provide credible assurances about the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme at a time when diplomacy is urgently needed.”
US-Iran Talks in Oman Signal Diplomatic Momentum
Grossi’s visit comes just days after a significant diplomatic meeting in Oman, where US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff also met with FM Araghchi. The two sides participated in indirect talks facilitated by Oman’s Foreign Minister.
According to US Department of State Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, the discussions were “positive and constructive”, with another round of talks scheduled for the upcoming Saturday.
Witkoff: “Only a Trump Deal Will Work”
Witkoff emphasized that any agreement with Iran must align with former President Trump’s vision for Middle East peace and security.
“A deal with Iran will only be completed if it is a Trump deal,” Witkoff said.
“Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponisation programme. It is imperative for the world that we create a tough, yet fair deal that will endure.”
US Reiterates: “Iran Must Not Get the Bomb”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump recently spoke with the Sultan of Oman to thank him for hosting the first direct talks.
“Our position remains unchanged—Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” she said.
Constructive Talks, Global Stakes
The recent US-Iran talks in Oman, though indirect, were marked by mutual respect and a constructive tone. As Grossi continues to press for transparency and cooperation, the world watches closely, hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing nuclear standoff.
