A quiet McDonald’s in Chicago has introduced an India-inspired menu item to its offerings, the New York Post reports. The McDonald’s Global Menu Restaurant is now offering the McAloo Tikki burger, a popular Indian vegetarian favorite.
While the opening has thrilled Indian-origin consumers and fans of international cuisine, there’s a catch: the burger won’t be here to stay. The menu at this special store rotates every few days, and the McAloo Tikki burger, with a spiced potato-and-pea patty, will be around only until June 23.
McAloo Tikki: Taste of Nostalgia
Tanmay Dhuri, an Indian customer who went to the outlet, said to Axios, “It has nostalgic value to it. It’s not like something that’s unique like in a flavor way, but it’s just that everybody had it for so long.”
The burger has also been appreciated by local foodies. A reporter from Axios who had tasted the burger commented, “The McAloo tastes good but isn’t very filling, so I would suggest ordering two and putting the patties on one bun. It’s always good to have a veggie burger that consists of vegetables and not lots of soy, which isn’t as flavorful and will make your tummy hurt.”
India’s Favourite Burger
New this month as a part of Global Favorites menu for the restaurant is the McAloo Tikki burger, which already caused a sensation. One satisfied customer allegedly had 30 of them ordered. At $5.99 (approximately Rs. 512), it’s the only American location where people can find this plant-based delicacy.
Since its initial release in 1998, the McAloo Tikki has become one of McDonald’s India’s most iconic and popular offerings, so its short-lived American introduction is all the more significant to those who know its history.
