Firefighters Tackle Wildfires On Both East And West Coasts As Fatalities Mount In US

Firefighters continued to battle large wildfires on both coasts of the United States on Sunday, with multiple blazes causing widespread damage and fatalities. In New York and New Jersey, a deadly fire claimed the life of an 18-year-old state parks employee, while in Southern California, a wildfire destroyed over 130 structures and damaged dozens more.

In Ventura County, California, the Mountain Fire, which began last Wednesday, continued to burn out of control, fueled by dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds. The fire, which has scorched about 32 square miles, remains 26% contained as of Sunday, with firefighters working in difficult, rugged terrain. The fire has forced thousands to evacuate their homes and poses a threat to critical infrastructure, including highways.

Meanwhile, a tragic incident in New York unfolded as Dariel Vasquez, a state parks employee, died after being struck by a falling tree while battling a wildfire in Sterling Forest, near Greenwood Lake. Vasquez, 18, was helping with fire line construction when the accident occurred. Tributes poured in from fellow workers, remembering him for his dedication.

In New Jersey, the Jennings Creek Wildfire threatened 25 structures, including homes, and has grown to 4.7 square miles, although it is 10% contained. Officials warned residents about unhealthy air quality caused by smoke from these fires, urging vulnerable groups to limit outdoor activity.

On the East Coast, firefighters made progress on smaller blazes, with containment achieved in some areas, such as a 175-acre fire in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. However, the state also reported charges in connection with a fire sparked by incendiary ammunition at a shooting range.

With the fire season in full swing, authorities remain on high alert as the risk of wildfires continues to escalate.
