Billionaire Elon Musk has expressed regret over some of his recent social media posts targeting former US President Donald Trump, days after a major public dispute between the two.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,” Musk admitted on Twitter. The tension began when Musk harshly criticised the Trump administration’s proposed spending bill, a key part of Trump’s domestic agenda for a potential second term. Musk called the legislation a “disgusting abomination” and urged political action against Republican lawmakers who supported it.

Trump’s Stern Warning
The White House responded swiftly. Speaking to NBC News, Trump warned Musk of “very serious consequences” if he pursued efforts to fund primary challengers against incumbent Republican lawmakers. “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,” Trump said, without detailing what those consequences might be. He also ruled out any reconciliation, saying, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
From Praise to Criticism
Interestingly, just a week before the fallout, Trump had publicly praised Musk’s role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a federal advisory group created to streamline government spending. However, Musk resigned from the position citing disagreements over budget priorities. Soon after his resignation, Musk began openly criticising Trump’s flagship spending legislation, sparking backlash that escalated into Trump accusing Musk of ingratitude and threatening to review federal contracts linked to Musk’s companies.
The Epstein Allegation and Retraction
Tensions peaked when Musk posted incendiary claims connecting Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting sex trafficking trial. Musk tweeted, “Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files,” alleging the existence of suppressed government documents that could implicate the former president. He urged followers to “mark this post for the future,” stating, “The truth will come out.”
However, Musk deleted these posts by Saturday morning without explanation. Trump dismissed the allegations to NBC as “old news,” adding, “Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it.” While Trump admits to knowing Epstein socially, he denies involvement in any wrongdoing. Officially released documents do not link Trump to illegal activities.
