Democratic lawmakers have called for a subpoena of Elon Musk following concerns about his recent access to Treasury payment systems and his involvement in federal agency decisions. The motion was swiftly rejected by Republicans in a tense House session on Wednesday.

Rep Gerry Connolly of Virginia raised alarms about Musk’s influence, arguing that the billionaire, who was not elected to any governmental position, had undue power over federal agencies. “Who is this unelected billionaire who can attempt to dismantle federal agencies, fire people, transfer them, offer them early retirement, and make sweeping changes without any congressional oversight?” Connolly asked.

He called for the House Oversight Committee to subpoena Musk to testify as a witness. However, the motion was quickly shut down by Chairman James Comer, who declared that it was not debatable. Several Democratic representatives, including Rep. Melanie Stansbury from New Mexico, protested the decision. Stansbury criticized Republicans for refusing to discuss the motion, calling it “outrageous” and accusing Musk of illegal activities.

He has been under increasing scrutiny concerning involvement in the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE. His actions regarding Treasury payment systems controlled by his task force have attracted criticism, while another aspect of criticism has been his supposed ability to sway former President Donald Trump’s thoughts, one of which included shutting down USAID programs.

Republicans have, however, defended the actions of Musk, arguing that any decisions were within the purview of the president and the secretary, and that Musk’s recommendations were advisory. Despite the controversy, the opposition from the Republicans to the subpoena motion shows that the debate over Musk’s influence in government is far from over.
