James Rondeau, the director of the Art Institute of Chicago, will keep his job after a mid-air incident in April when he allegedly got drunk, disrobed, and was arrested. The board of the museum confirmed he would return to work after an investigation.
The incident took place on April 18 on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Munich. CBS News reports Rondeau acted strangely throughout the overseas flight, exposing himself to other passengers. It is reported he mixed alcohol with prescription pills, which could have prompted the strange behavior.
Rondeau was apprehended by authorities upon arrival at the airport.
Museum’s Response and His Statement
After the incident, Rondeau took a voluntary leave of absence. The Art Institute of Chicago launched an independent investigation into the incident. In a statement to CBS News, Rondeau showed remorse:
“I strongly regret this incident and the effect it has had on me and the museum and my colleagues. I have served the past 27 years of my working life to the Art Institute and I feel fortunate to be given the chance to continue advancing its mission.”
Result of Investigation
In spite of the scandal, the museum has chosen to reinstate Rondeau. A representative of the Art Institute said to CBS News:
“Board leadership of the Art Institute of Chicago has completed an independent inquiry into this incident and is assured in James Rondeau’s leadership and capacity to remain the President and Director of the museum.”
Rondeau will be back in the office on Monday.
James Rondeau is the highest-paid employee at the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a salary of over $1 million a year, according to the New York Post.
