Building Collapse In Tanzania’s Dar Es Salaam Leaves Dozens Trapped, One Dead

Rescue efforts are underway in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial hub, after a multi-storey building collapsed in the city’s bustling Kariakoo market. Authorities have confirmed at least one fatality, and dozens remain trapped under the rubble. Rescuers, including soldiers, have been using hand tools, drills, and sledgehammers to search for survivors. Excavators are also assisting in the recovery efforts.

As of now, at least 56 people have been rescued, according to the Tanzania Red Cross Society. The collapse occurred as people were shopping in the building, and witness reports suggest the structure had expanded its underground business space the day before the incident.

Dar es Salaam, home to over 5 million people, is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. The port city has seen rapid urban expansion, which has raised concerns about building safety. This tragic incident is reminiscent of another collapse in 2013, when a 16-storey building fell, killing 34 people.
