Boat Capsizes Near San Diego, Three Dead and Seven Missing

A boat capsized near Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego early Monday, resulting in three deaths and seven missing persons. Additionally, four individuals were injured, including an Indian family.

Indian Family Involved in the Tragedy

The Indian Consulate General in San Francisco confirmed that an Indian family was affected by the incident. “Two Indian children are missing. The parents are currently receiving treatment at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla,” the consulate said. Moreover, they are in close contact with local authorities and providing the necessary assistance to the family.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing, and the cause of the capsizing remains unclear. Officials have not yet identified the victims or fully understood the circumstances behind the tragedy.

Initial Report on Missing Persons

According to the Associated Press, nine individuals were initially reported missing. However, two people were later found and detained. It is still unclear which agency detained them or the reason behind it. The U.S. Border Patrol has not responded to inquiries regarding their involvement.

Panga Boat and Suspected Migrants

The U.S. Coast Guard identified the capsized vessel as a “panga,” a type of open fishing boat commonly used by smugglers. The boat capsized shortly after sunrise, approximately 56 kilometers from the Mexico border. “They were not tourists,” said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris Sappey. “They are believed to be migrants.” Migrants often resort to these dangerous sea routes to avoid heavily guarded land borders, especially along California’s coast.

Injuries and Medical Treatment

The four injured individuals were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. They were treated for respiratory issues after arriving by ambulance. Three of the injured were in their 30s, while one was a teenager. No further details were provided regarding their conditions.

Search Efforts Continue

The U.S. Coast Guard has deployed both a helicopter and a boat to assist in the search for the missing individuals. The efforts continue, as authorities work tirelessly to locate and rescue anyone still missing.
