MrBeast sparked discussions with a tweet on Tuesday, saying, “Okay fine, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned.” His comment came after TikTok dismissed claims that China might sell its US operations to Elon Musk.
The YouTuber later added, “Unironically I’ve had so many billionaires reach out to me since I tweeted this, let’s see if we can pull this off.” While his tweet gained attention, many question whether he has the financial means to follow through.
TikTok Plans for a Shutdown
If the federal ban takes effect, TikTok plans to deactivate its app for American users. Reports suggest users trying to access the app will see a pop-up redirecting them to a website with information about the ban. TikTok also plans to let users download their data before the shutdown.
This approach differs from the law’s requirement, which mandates a ban on new downloads while allowing current users temporary access. ByteDance and TikTok have not issued an official statement yet.

In April 2024, President Joe Biden signed a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US operations by January 19, 2025. If the sale doesn’t happen, TikTok faces a nationwide ban. The US government alleges TikTok shares user data with China and spreads propaganda, accusations ByteDance denies.
ByteDance argues the ban violates the First Amendment, which protects free speech. Last month, TikTok revealed in court filings that a month-long ban could cause one-third of its 170 million US users to stop using the app.
