Accident Details

The bus was carrying around 40 passengers when the driver reportedly lost control due to a mechanical failure. The vehicle veered off the mountain road near União dos Palmares and crashed in a hard-to-reach area.

Historical Significance of the Region

The crash happened in the Serra da Barriga mountain range, an area tied to Brazil’s history. This region was once home to Quilombo dos Palmares, a 17th-century settlement founded by escaped slaves. The site represents resistance against colonial oppression.

November is Brazil’s “Black Awareness” month, with a public holiday on November 20 honoring Zumbi, the leader of Quilombo dos Palmares. The tragedy adds to the sadness of this time of remembrance.

Racial equality minister Anielle Franco expressed her sorrow on X. She wrote, “This tragedy saddens us even more deeply during this month of Black Awareness.”
