US Can Outmatch China In Pacific Despite Shrinking Edge

Taipei, December 11 – Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, expressed confidence in the US military’s ability to defeat China in the Pacific. However, he cautioned that the US’s technical advantage over China is diminishing, urging immediate advancements in key defense areas.

Key Challenges Highlighted

Speaking at the Reagan Defense Forum, Paparo pinpointed two critical areas requiring improvement to maintain military dominance:

  1. Missile Technology: While advanced cruise missiles offer precise, long-range capabilities, their high cost—over USD 1 million per launch—poses a challenge. He suggested the use of affordable drones that can be remotely controlled for front-line combat.
  2. Cyber-Resilient Communication Networks: Developing secure communication systems capable of withstanding cyberattacks is vital for maintaining strategic advantage.

Concerns Over North Korea and Russia

Paparo also discussed growing threats from North Korea and its collaboration with Russia. According to him:

  • Arms Trade Agreement: Russia has agreed to provide fourth-generation fighter jets, including MiG-29s and Su-27s, in exchange for North Korean troops aiding Moscow in Ukraine.
  • Technological Aspirations: Pyongyang seeks ballistic missile re-entry and submarine-related technology from Moscow.
  • Missile Testing: North Korea recently tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, achieving an altitude of 7,000 km. However, it continues testing due to challenges in mastering re-entry vehicle technology.

China’s Ambitions Over Taiwan

Paparo reiterated Chinese President Xi Jinping’s directive for the Chinese military to be prepared to take Taiwan by 2027, even if it means confronting US forces. However, he clarified that this directive does not indicate an imminent decision to attack.

Conclusion: Urgency to Innovate

The US remains confident in its ability to counter threats in the Pacific but must act swiftly to address its narrowing technological edge. Enhancing missile systems and developing cyber-resilient communications are critical to maintaining superiority.
