A medieval property in North Yorkshire, the beautiful Ripley Castle, is now up for sale for the first time in nearly 700 years. The castle has been valued at £21 million, which is approximately ₹225 crore. It is probably going to be one of the most expensive properties sold outside of London.
Spanning 445 acres, the castle includes a lake, pub, helipad, ample parking, cricket pitch, hotel, tea room, gift shop, and a popular wedding venue. It is divided into nine lots, which can be bought individually or in combination.
The estate has been in the Ingilby family since 1308/9 when Sir Thomas Ingilby married heiress Edeline Thwenge. Their son, also Thomas, was knighted after saving the life of King Edward III, who was attacked by a wild boar. Now, more than five decades since taking on the castle, Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby have decided to sell.
Sir Thomas shared, “There are days when we are very positive about it, and there are other days when we are sad for what we will miss. I’ve been looking after the place for over 50 years, so this has been my whole life. I don’t want to be carried out of here feet first; I’ve got things I want to do.”
Lady Ingilby remembered their life at the castle fondly when she said, “Some of the events we’ve hosted here have been just incredibly moving. There are evenings when we walk around the gardens by the lake, and deer come down to drink while the scent of the flowers surrounds us. It feels like something out of a fairy tale.” They have four grandchildren and plan to travel after selling the castle.
