Former President John Dramani Mahama secured a historic victory in Ghana’s presidential election, defeating the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. The win comes after a period of economic turmoil, which led many voters to punish the government for its handling of high inflation and a national debt default.
Bawumia conceded defeat on Sunday (December 8) following Saturday’s (December 7) vote, acknowledging public frustration with the economic situation. His concession marks the end of eight years of NPP rule under President Nana Akufo-Addo, during which Ghana faced significant financial struggles.
For Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, this victory represents a remarkable comeback after failed attempts in the 2016 and 2020 elections. He becomes the first leader in Ghana’s Fourth Republic to regain the presidency after losing a reelection.
Bawumia announced his concession before official results were final, calling Mahama’s victory decisive. He expressed respect for the outcome, noting the NDC had also won a majority in the parliamentary election, despite awaiting final seat tallies.
Supporters of Mahama celebrated in the streets of Accra, as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepared for a return to power. Mahama’s leadership plans include tackling corruption and bolstering social policies, while also voicing support for Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQ legislation.
Mahama’s win signals a new era for Ghana, with hopes to address the country’s economic challenges and implement reforms to strengthen governance.
