India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, made it clear that India will match any Pakistani retaliation with a proportional response. He spoke firmly in an interview with Sky News and said, “We’re not looking for an escalation, but if Pakistan responds, as we have done, we will respond proportionally and in exactly the same light.”

India Responds to Pahalgam Attack
The latest tensions began after terrorists killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. These terrorists were reportedly linked to a Pakistani group. Two weeks later, India launched Operation Sindoor. This military action targeted nine terror camps inside Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Retaliation Fails
The day after Operation Sindoor, Pakistan attempted a coordinated attack in different Indian areas. Indian forces stopped the attack in time. Doraiswami explained, “The original escalation is Pakistan’s sponsored terror groups’ attack on civilians.”
Indian Strikes Were Limited and Focused
Doraiswami defended India’s actions. He said the strikes were not aggressive. Instead, they were carefully aimed at terror camps. He described them as “precise, targeted, reasonable, and moderate.” He added, “It was focused principally and solely on terrorist infrastructure.”
India Avoided Military Escalation
Doraiswami stressed that India did not want to raise military tensions. “We made it abundantly clear that the object of this exercise was clearly to avoid military escalation,” he said. He also noted that Pakistan indirectly admitted that India didn’t cross their airspace.
India Dismisses Pakistan’s Jet Claim
When asked about reports of Indian jets being shot down, Doraiswami responded sharply. He denied that Pakistan used Chinese-made fighter jets to down Indian aircraft.
He said, “If it satisfies Pakistan’s ego to say that they’ve done something, they could have used that as an off-ramp to move on. Clearly they’ve chosen not to, and they’ve chosen to escalate the matter.”
India Stands Ready but Seeks Peace
Doraiswami repeated that India does not want a war. Still, India will answer any threat. He also reminded that Pakistan had recently fired artillery across the Line of Control. “For the last 15 days, they’ve also opened artillery fire along the Line of Actual Control… That’s led to civilian casualties,” he said.
India Foils More Attacks
The Indian defence ministry confirmed that Pakistan-origin weapons targeted stations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur. Indian forces quickly neutralized these threats.
