India Issues Advisory For Syria, Advises Citizens Not to Travel Amid Escalating Violence

The Indian government has issued a travel advisory urging citizens to avoid traveling to Syria. This decision comes amid rising violence and growing safety concerns in the region.

MEA Issues Safety Guidelines

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly advised Indians to suspend all travel to Syria until further notice. The government also urged Indian nationals in Syria to stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus. They can reach out through the emergency helpline or email at hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in.

For those currently in Syria, the MEA recommended leaving as soon as possible using available commercial flights. Those unable to leave immediately should exercise extreme caution and limit their movements.

Concerns Over Rising Violence

Escalating violence in northern Syria prompted the advisory. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the safety of the 90 Indian nationals currently in Syria, including 14 UN employees. “We are closely monitoring the situation and remain in contact with our nationals,” Jaiswal said.

Renewed Rebel Offensive

Syrian rebels have intensified their offensive, reigniting a civil war that had been relatively quiet since 2020. Rebel forces recently captured Hama and are now advancing toward Homs. If taken, Homs could divide President Bashar al-Assad’s territories, CNN reported.

Civilian Impact

Hundreds of civilians fled Homs overnight, fearing further violence. The conflict, which began in 2011 during the Arab Spring protests, has already claimed over 300,000 lives and displaced millions, according to the United Nations.

Urgent Need for Caution

The renewed violence highlights the fragile state of Syria. The Indian government’s advisory prioritizes the safety of its citizens and urges them to act quickly and responsibly.
