UK has suffered major flight disruptions yesterday due to thick layer of fog causing poor visibility, limiting air traffic on one of the busiest time of the year.
Gatwick Airport in London warned its passengers of possible delays all day, apologizing for the inconvenience. Flights were delayed up to three hours Friday due to bad weather, and by Saturday morning, at least 40 short-haul flights to Europe had been delayed. Heathrow Airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs, also advised passengers to check with their airlines for updates on possible delays.
The Met Office, the UK national weather service, said some areas were reporting dense patches of fog, with some visibility as low as 100 meters (328 feet). Travelers were urged to allow extra time to complete their journeys, as drivers were advised to use caution on the roads.
The Met Office said that the situation will improve on Sunday. But the UK’s main air traffic control organization said restrictions would continue in areas with limited visibility to ensure safety. “These restrictions are put in place solely to maintain safety,” the organization said, adding that teams were working with airports and airlines to minimize disruptions.
It’s adding to the frustration because many of these passengers are traveling during the post-Christmas holiday period and before New Year celebrations. Airports and authorities have reassured travelers that efforts are in place to mitigate the effects of weather-related disruptions.
