Author Aija Mayrock Opens Up About “Renting” An Elderly Man In Japan

Author Aija Mayrock recently took to Instagram to share her unique experience of “renting” an older man for a day in Japan. While the concept might initially sound unusual, it’s rooted in fostering meaningful intergenerational connections. The initiative enables young individuals to “rent” retired men to gain wisdom, share stories, and provide companionship.

In the video, Ms. Mayrock explained that she used a Japanese platform called Ossan Rental to connect with the older man. Throughout the day, she explored Japan with him and sought his guidance on various aspects of life, including career, relationships, and personal growth.

Sharing her experience on Instagram, she wrote: “I rented an older man for the day. This is the 5th video in my series, Aging Around The World, where I explore how different countries and cultures tackle aging and longevity.”

The video, posted a few days ago, has garnered over 779,000 views and more than 19,000 likes. It has sparked admiration for the Japanese culture and the innovative concept of intergenerational bonding.

Positive Reactions

Many praised the initiative in the comments.

  • “I’m really impressed about Japanese culture. This is so inspiring and a good way to serve others with experience and example. Thank you for this content,” one user commented.
  • Another user reflected on the lack of similar respect for elders in the United States: “In the USA older people are overlooked, ignored and thrown away. I’m an older woman. At 61, I still play bass and sing in a rock band. We don’t let America tell us we’re not relevant.”
  • Others highlighted its broader benefits, with one remarking: Indeed, it is a very innovative way to combat loneliness, depression, and a myriad of other illnesses in the aging population. I love this idea!”

The Ossan Rental Concept

Ossan Rental, according to its official website, allows users to “rent an old man” for 1,000 yen per hour. The service caters to various requests, including casual conversations, advice on personal or professional matters, walking pets, or even tidying spaces. However, the company has strict guidelines prohibiting any requests that violate public order or morality, including inappropriate or commercial demands.

This thoughtful approach to addressing loneliness and intergenerational disconnect has resonated globally, with many hoping the concept will spread to other parts of the world.
