According to the report, published by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water, more than a quarter of the world’s population or approximately 2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and around 3.6 billion or 46%, do not have access to safely managed sanitation.
The global urban population facing water scarcity is expected to more than double by 2050, from 930 million in 2016 to 1.7-2.4 billion people. The increasing frequency of extreme and prolonged droughts is also stressing ecosystems, with dire consequences for both plant and animal species, according to a report published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
