Zelenskyy warns of Russian tactics amid potential US policy shifts

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently expressed concerns over Russia’s intentions, stating that Moscow is closely monitoring US policy as the election approaches. He emphasized that Russia’s willingness to negotiate depends largely on the outcome of the upcoming elections in the United States.

Potential candidates split on Ukraine support

If Vice President Kamala Harris is elected, analysts predict a continuation of current Biden administration policies, which have generally favored Ukraine despite occasional disagreements over military strategies. Conversely, former President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to withdraw support for Ukraine, claiming he could resolve the conflict swiftly with a peace plan that echoes Russian demands. Experts caution that regardless of who takes office, it’s unclear whether Russia will be ready to engage in meaningful negotiations.

Ukraine prepares for protracted conflict

As the war escalates, Ukraine faces significant challenges on the battlefield, compounded by a potential reduction in US aid. NATO estimates that over 600,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or injured, highlighting the immense toll of attritional warfare. In response, Ukraine’s Parliament voted to extend martial law and increase troop levels, with plans to draft an additional 160,000 personnel.

Ukrainian commanders stress the need for ongoing support from Western allies to counter Russia’s numerical and technological advantages. With winter approaching, the population is increasingly weary, but they remain resolute in their resistance against Russian aggression, aware of the dire consequences of occupation. Zelenskyy continues to urge bipartisan support from the US to ensure Ukraine can sustain its defense.
