British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday announced that the UK’s general elections will take place on July 4.

“Uncertain times call for clear plan and bold action,” said Sunak.

The announcement followed Sunak’s meeting with his cabinet ministers at Downing Street. Foreign Minister David Cameron abruptly cut short his visit to Albania, and the Defense Minister postponed a foreign trip to attend the cabinet meeting with senior ministers. This election will mark the first time Rishi Sunak, 44, will engage with the public as the leader.

He was appointed leader of the largest party in parliament through an internal Conservative vote in October 2022.

The vote is the third since the Brexit referendum in 2016. This election comes as Sunak aims to leverage improved economic data to attract voters impacted by cost-of-living increases. Previously, when asked about the rumors, Sunak reiterated that a national election is planned for the second half of 2024.

“Spoiler alert: there is going to be a general election in the second half of this year,” Sunak had told the parliament.

Speculation was fueled by the possibility that the meeting might need to approve a decision to call for an election earlier than the previously anticipated October or November dates, which most pundits had considered the most likely.
