The number of cases across India surged by a record daily rise of 349,691 on Sunday as 2,767 deaths were also reported, according to the Ministry of Health. India now has a total of 16.96 million cases, including 192,311 deaths.

As several countries across the globe announced support for India, Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, warned in an op-ed in The Washington Post that the 1.3 billion strong country is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. He said that close to 2,000 people were dying daily, although most experts estimate the true number to be five to ten times higher, observed Reuters.

Delhi recorded 22,933 fresh Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, as CM Arvind Kejriwal extended the lockdown by another week.

In Maharashtra, 66,191 new cases and 832 deaths were reported on Sunday. Out of the new cases, 5,542 came from Mumbai, its lowest single-day rise in infections so far this month, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It is for the first time since 12 April that the number of daily cases in Mumbai is lower than 7,000. The virus also claimed the lives of 64 patients, 36 of them with co-morbidities, read a statement from the health department. Overall, the state still has 698,354 active cases.

Karnataka reported its biggest single-day spike with 34,804 new cases of Covid-19, taking the state’s total caseload to 13.39 lakh, while 143 fatalities pushed the death toll to 14,426, said the health department on Sunday. Bengaluru Urban alone accounted for 20,733 cases. The state cabinet is likely to take a decision on Monday regarding the imposition of lockdown-like restrictions on all days of the week. “Weekend curfew restrictions are in place till May 4 and as per the guidelines, it will be there next Saturday, Sunday also. Discussions are on whether to enforce curfew on weekdays, whether to go for complete lockdown or not,” Industries Minister Jagadish Shettar said.

Cumulatively 1,339,201 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which include 14,426 deaths and 1,062,594 discharges. Out of 262,162 active cases, 260,670 patients are stable and in isolation at designated hospitals, while 1,492 are in intensive care units.

Kerala reported 28,469 new cases on Sunday. The numbers came after 126,773 tests were conducted. 8,122 recoveries and 30 deaths were also recorded in 24 hours, as per the state health department. There are 218,893 active cases in Kerala right now. Total recoveries stand at 1,181,324, while the death toll has risen to 5,110.

In Andhra Pradesh, 12,634 new cases of the infection were reported, along with 69 deaths and 4,304 recoveries, in a 24-hour period. Active cases in the state stood at 89,732, while the total deaths increased to 7,685. Andhra Pradesh has also noted 936,143 total recoveries.

Gujarat recorded 14,296 fresh cases, 157 deaths, and 6,727 discharges in 24 hours. The state’s total cases now stand at 496,033 while the death toll is 6,328. Total discharges in the state amount to 374,699 and 11,295,536 persons have been vaccinated so far. Active cases remain 115,006.

Uttar Pradesh on Sunday recorded 38,055 fresh coronavirus cases and 223 fatalities, pushing the virus tally to 1,086,625 and the toll to 11,165, according to an official statement. Of the new deaths, Kanpur recorded the highest with 19, followed by Varanasi at 15 and Lucknow with 14. Lucknow also recorded the most number of new cases with 5,187 fresh cases.

Bihar reported 12,795 fresh Covid-19 cases and 7,533 discharges in the last 24 hours. Active cases in the state stand at 87,154 while the total discharges amount to 314,286. The death toll is 2,155. Rajasthan reported 15,809 new Covid cases, 74 deaths and 6,649 recoveries in 24 hours, as per state health department on Sunday. The death toll mounted to 3,601, while active cases stood at 136,702.

Himachal Pradesh reported 1,363 new cases of Covid-19, 1,161 discharges, and 32 deaths in 24 hours. The death toll rose to 1,323 while active cases stood at 13,577.

Jammu and Kashmir recorded 2,381 new cases, 21 deaths and 866 recoveries in the same period. Active cases in the Union Territory stand at 19,558. In view of the prevailing situation, the J&K government ordered that night curfew timings within the municipal limits/urban local body limits of all districts be from 8 pm to 6 am instead of 10 pm to 6 am.
