Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, is positioned to continue “creating miracles” in the global semiconductor industry, according to its visionary co-founder Morris Chang. Speaking at TSMC’s annual Sports Day, Chang praised the leadership team’s efforts amid complex geopolitical shifts, ensuring that TSMC remains a powerhouse in the global semiconductor sector.
Global Trade Tensions Pose Challenges for TSMC
Reflecting on TSMC’s role in the supply chain, Chang pointed out that global trade dynamics have grown increasingly tense, signaling the end of trade globalization. These challenges, he warned, could bring new hurdles for TSMC as its influence in the industry expands. However, Chang expressed unwavering optimism about TSMC’s future, noting that its unique strengths — cutting-edge technology, efficient manufacturing, and solid client relationships — provide a strong foundation for continued success.
Milestones Ahead: 2-Nanometer Process and Global Expansion
TSMC is moving forward with plans for 2-nanometer process technology, which will begin mass production next year, according to chairman C.C. Wei. The company is also preparing to roll out its advanced A16 process, an improved version of the 2-nanometer technology, which is set for commercial production in late 2026. TSMC’s international expansion is also on track, enhancing its position as a critical player in the semiconductor industry.
Recognizing Employee Dedication on Sports Day
TSMC’s Sports Day holds a special place in Morris Chang’s heart, as it showcases the dedication and unity of TSMC’s workforce. This year, to celebrate their hard work, each non-managerial employee in Taiwan received a bonus of NT $20,000 (approximately USD 623). Over 60,000 employees who joined before May 31 qualified for this bonus, bringing the total reward payout to NT $1.2 billion. Wei referred to the bonus as a “small gift” for the company’s employees.
Financial Success Despite Challenges
In the first nine months of 2024, TSMC reported a net profit of NT $798.59 billion, a 33.1% increase from the previous year. The company also projects a 30% year-over-year sales growth in U.S. dollar terms, underscoring its steady rise amid turbulent times.
Looking Forward: TSMC’s Legacy and Future Vision
Under Morris Chang’s guidance, TSMC has grown into the world’s leading pure-play foundry, earning him the title “father of semiconductors” in Taiwan. As the company ventures toward new technological milestones, Chang’s belief in TSMC’s potential remains strong, inspiring continued innovation and commitment from the company’s team.
