Former U.S. President Donald Trump has revived his controversial travel ban policy from his first term. In a fresh move on Wednesday night, Trump signed an order restricting entry into the United States from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
The executive order also introduces tighter screening procedures for travelers from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. The policy will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.
“I must act to protect the national security and national interest of the United States and its people,” Trump stated in his proclamation, signaling a return to his hardline immigration approach that had sparked global criticism during his presidency.
