UN Chief Calls Jaishankar, Condemns Pahalgam Terror Attack

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has offered his utmost support to India following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, the majority of whom were tourists, in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for Guterres’ unequivocal condemnation of the attack. The attack, one of the bloodiest on non-combatants in the area in decades, has been universally condemned worldwide.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, in a tweet on Monday, shared that he had received a call from the UN Secretary-General, who expressed his “unequivocal condemnation” of the attack. “Appreciate his unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability,” Jaishankar wrote, adding that India is determined to bring the perpetrators, planners, and backers of the attack to justice.

A Call for International Solidarity

“Guterres’ condemnation is in line with intensified diplomatic efforts by India to generate global pressure on nations purportedly supporting cross-border terrorism. The powerful statement of the United Nations chief is regarded as an important move. It reaffirms India’s position that terror needs to be fought globally and without compromise.”

India has insisted that Pakistan-based forces were responsible for the attack, but Pakistan denied this. The Indian government pledged to take all steps necessary to bring out and isolate the perpetrators of the strike.

Increased Security and International Reaction

Following the attack, security has been increased in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in places visited by tourists. Investigations are ongoing to identify the logistical backup and planning involved. Indian officials indicate that preliminary reports point to the involvement of foreign militants trained for such purposes. Efforts are being made to identify the handlers.

While so, India has called upon the global powers and international institutions to take note of and act upon what it calls a trend of ‘state-sponsored terrorism.’ Guterres’ backing is likely to add strength to India’s campaigns at international platforms such as the United Nations Security Council and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
