Srinagar:
Officials said the incident occurred while Army personnel were carrying out a standard equipment transfer procedure inside the camp. A grenade accidentally detonated during the process, critically injuring two soldiers.
The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, where they were declared dead on arrival.
The deceased have been identified as Sapper Chavan Vikram Balakrishna, who was serving with 8 Rashtriya Rifles under 12 Infantry Brigade and hailed from Airoli in Maharashtra’s Thane district, and Sapper Yadav Arjun Rajindra, also attached to 8 Rashtriya Rifles under 12 Infantry Brigade, a resident of Shahapur village in the Karad area of Maharashtra’s Satara district.
Army authorities have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the detonation. Preliminary information suggests that the blast was accidental, with no indication of militant involvement or hostile action.
Senior Army officials have expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of all necessary support.
