U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the United States will take control of the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, he stated that all two million Palestinians should leave the enclave.
Trump Promises Economic Growth
During the press conference, Trump reinforced his plan. “The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We will own it,” he said. Moreover, he promised to boost Gaza’s economy, create jobs, and build housing. According to him, this would turn the region into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
Decision Was Carefully Considered
Trump defended his move, insisting it was not made in haste. “This was not a decision made lightly. Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing it, and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent,” he said. As a result, he believes the plan will bring prosperity to the area.
Trump’s Refugee Plan Faces Rejection
Earlier, Trump suggested that Jordan and Egypt should accept Palestinian refugees. However, both countries rejected the idea. In addition, Palestinian leaders and Arab nations strongly opposed the plan. They even called it an act of ethnic cleansing.
Netanyahu Visits Washington
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington following the implementation of a Gaza truce. Notably, he became the first foreign leader to meet Trump in his second term. In addition to his meeting with Trump, he will also hold discussions with U.S. military leaders and members of Congress.
Ceasefire Ends 15-Month Conflict
The Gaza ceasefire, which took effect on January 19, brought an end to 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas. Consequently, Israel allowed displaced Palestinians to return to their homes in northern Gaza. At the same time, Hamas agreed to release 33 Israeli prisoners in exchange for over 2,000 Palestinian detainees.
