In a move that echoes his first term in office, US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he plans to reinstate the “maximum pressure” policy on Iran, addressing growing concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The policy, which includes tough sanctions, aims to curb Tehran’s potential development of nuclear weapons.
The Reinstatement of Tough Measures
As part of this renewed approach, Trump signed a memorandum that reimposes sanctions on Iran, with a particular focus on its nuclear activities. The memorandum directs all US government departments to implement these sanctions, providing Trump with “all of the possible tools” to prevent Iran from becoming a “malign actor.”
Trump acknowledged the harsh nature of the sanctions, stating that he was “torn” about signing the memorandum but felt it was necessary to maintain US strength in dealing with Iran.
Hope for Diplomatic Solutions
Despite reintroducing the tough policy, Trump expressed hope that the sanctions would not need to be fully enforced. “Hopefully, I’m not going to have to use it very much,” he said. The President also left open the possibility of a diplomatic resolution, stating, “We will see whether or not we can arrange. We’ll work out a deal with Iran and everybody can live together.”
Severe Consequences for Iran
In a stark warning, Trump also threatened that if Iran were to harm him, the country would face severe retaliation. “If they do it, they get obliterated, there won’t be anything left,” he declared, emphasizing the potential for devastating consequences.
The reinstatement of sanctions and the renewed pressure on Iran highlight the ongoing tensions over the country’s nuclear program, as well as the complex relationship between the US and Iran.
