Simla Agreement Suspended: Pakistan Calls India’s Treaty Halt ‘Act of War’, Shuts Border

Islamabad reacted vigorously to India’s retaliatory measures after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed at least 26 lives by issuing a string of countermeasures on Thursday (April 24). These decisions were taken in a high-level Pakistan National Security Committee (NSC) meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Pakistan Announces Indus Treaty Suspension as ‘Act of War

One of the most powerful responses was against India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan, in an official statement, threatened catastrophic repercussions if India goes ahead with diverting river waters.

“Water is a Vital National Interest of Pakistan, a lifeline for its 240 million people, and its availability will be safeguarded at all costs. Any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan as per the Indus Waters Treaty, and the usurpation of the rights of lower riparian will be considered as an Act of War and responded with full force across the complete spectrum of National Power,” Pakistan said in a statement.

Bilateral Agreements and Border Relations Cut Off

Pakistan suspended the historic Simla Agreement and all other bilateral agreements with India. In a tit-for-tat, Islamabad immediately closed down the Wagah Border Post in lockstep with India’s closure announcement on Wednesday. The neighbouring country also stopped all SAARC visas for Indian citizens, except for Sikh religious pilgrims.

Airspace, Diplomats, and Trade Cut Off

Taking the diplomatic confrontation further, Pakistan sealed its airspace for all Indian-owned or operated flights with immediate effect. It also ordered Indian Defence, Naval, and Air Advisors to be expelled as persona non grata and asked them to vacate the country by April 30. The strength of the Indian High Commission staff in Islamabad has been limited to 30—matching similar action taken by India.

In another setback to bilateral ties, Islamabad suspended all trade with India, including that passed through third nations.

Pakistan Indicators Preparedness for ‘National Power Response’

In its formal release, Pakistan committed to apply its “full-spectrum national power” in response to any challenge towards its sovereignty. The declaration emphasized Pakistan’s preparedness to meet what it termed India’s “reckless and irresponsible behavior.”.

As tensions ratchet up between the two nuclear neighbours, the region awaits further news amidst increased international concern.
