Julien’s Auctions is set to host what it calls the “most comprehensive and historic” auction of Princess Diana’s wardrobe to date. Titled Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection, the event will feature over 200 garments and artifacts, including many never-before-seen items worn by the late Princess of Wales and other British royals.
The auction opens for bidding on May 20, with the live event scheduled for June 26. The collection includes elegant gowns, statement pieces, personal accessories, and historical garments spanning the British monarchy, with some pieces dating back to the 19th century. Items from royals such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Queen Elizabeth II, and the Queen Mother will also be featured.
Julien’s Auctions said, “Over 200 extraordinary pieces that defined an era, from her elegant gowns to statement pieces – plus ultra-rare items from other British Royals. Many which have never been seen by the public before!”
In previous years, Julien’s has seen record-breaking sales of Princess Diana’s iconic dresses. In 2023, a Jacques Azagury evening gown worn by Diana in 1985 was sold for $1.14 million, while a 1987 Victor Edelstein gown fetched $910,000. Many of her outfits consistently drew six-figure bids.
The auction house emphasized how Princess Diana used fashion to express her personal transformation. “Her style was a language. It evolved in real time alongside her personal transformation, from a shy, blushing young bride obscured by frilly gowns and modest florals to a confident, autonomous global humanitarian who could command a room in sleek Versace or an off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian dress that sent tabloid editors’ hearts and pens aflutter,” it noted.
Martin Nolan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Julien’s Auctions, added, “Princess Diana holds a special place in the heart of Julien’s Auctions, and we are honoured to continue to preserve her legacy telling her story through the pieces that defined her elegance, grace, glamour and spirit.”
Calling the auction a rare opportunity for collectors and admirers, Julien’s stated, “Each item is a window into a moment in history and a tribute to a woman whose humility and style and personal warmth continues to inspire the world.”
