“New Low”: Pakistan Shells Near Religious Sites in Poonch, Kartarpur Corridor Shut Down

On May 7, 2025, the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan came under high tension with a fatal attack on civilians. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has confirmed that while there was intense shelling across the LoC, a Pakistani shell fell just behind Christ School in Poonch. “The shell hit the residence of two students from the school, killing them and their parents in a tragic accident,” he confirmed.

The attack in Poonch also prompted various school officials and locals to take cover in an underground hall, but luckily, the school had already closed when it happened, thus avoiding more casualties.

Targeting Religious and Cultural Sites

Misri’s statement further highlighted Pakistan’s deliberate targeting of religious and cultural sites, stating, “Pakistan is deliberately targeting places of worship, including gurdwaras, churches, and temples, marking a new low in their actions.”

These acts are not only direct attacks on the people living near the LoC but also on the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region. This intentional tactic to hurt religious institutions makes the already tense situation worse and complicates the conflict between the two countries further.

Suspension of Kartarpur Sahib Corridor Services

Following the heightened security issues, Misri also declared the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor services suspended indefinitely. “Given the prevailing security situation, the services of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor have been suspended with immediate effect,” he confirmed.

The Kartarpur Corridor, where Indian pilgrims could travel visa-free to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, has been a beacon of hope for inter-faith harmony. Its closure highlights the gravity of the situation and the rising risks to civilians as well as religious travelers.

Background of the Attack

The attack follows a series of border incursions and missile launches in the region, with Pakistan continuing to ratchet up military activity against India. On May 7, Pakistan also made multiple intrusions into Indian airspace, triggering quick action by the Indian Military to eliminate the threat.

With the constant military battles and the reckless nature of Pakistan, things have come to a head, not only impacting the civilian population but also the overall diplomatic ties between the two nations.
