Inside Operation Sindoor: T-72 Tanks, Deadly Accuracy, & India’s Calculated Response

In a rare account, a top Indian Army officer has described the important role of armoured formations, especially the T-72 tanks and BMP-2s, in Operation Sindoor on May 7. The decisive military operation was India’s retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists, including one Nepali national. While the Air Force and infantry divisions were given publicity, the armoured division’s role had been kept secret — until now.

Tanks Rolled In With Purpose

The officer, who spoke to NDTV on condition of anonymity because of security reasons, said T-72 tanks were moved near the Line of Control (LoC) before the operation. Their task: destroy terror hubs and infiltration points in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

“We also hit enemy posts, which were facilitating infiltration. We know which posts are used as bases for infiltration by the enemy. An informed call was taken — and the targets were hit,” the Colonel told NDTV.

This specific strategy underscores the preparedness of the army and sophisticated planning. The tanks, with their powerful firepower with 125 mm guns and missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of 4,000 meters, were utilized wisely.

“Only a fraction of the hardware was utilized to counter ceasefire violations. 300-mm guns and 4000-metre missiles can prove extremely effective against the enemy,” he added.

Measured Yet Powerful

Although used in moderation to prevent escalation, their potency was undeniable_. The raid successfully defused nine key terror hotbeds, such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad command centers. More than 100 terrorists were eliminated, some of them long-wanted for significant attacks, such as the 1999 hijacking of Kandahar.

This precision strike with armor not only halted further infiltration but also conveyed a powerful message. The officer reaffirmed the army is still at high levels of readiness, with both men and machines prepared to strike again if necessary.

Diplomatic Front Moves Next

With the military victory, the Indian government is scheduled to dispatch a 51-member cross-party delegation overseas. They aim to gather worldwide support and strengthen India’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.

India’s reaction to the Pahalgam attack, in the form of Operation Sindoor, reflects a new strategic stance — firm, targeted, and non-escalatory. The armoured division proved to be an invaluable asset in executing this calibrated response.
