External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has emphasized India’s measured approach to the ongoing tensions with Pakistan in high-level discussions with key international counterparts. In a series of diplomatic conversations, Jaishankar shared updates on the cross-border situation and reiterated India’s commitment to a calibrated response while warning of firm retaliation if provoked further.
Jaishankar held separate phone calls with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. “India has been measured in its actions. However, any escalation will get a firm response,” the Minister posted on X, highlighting the nature of India’s approach.
In a parallel discussion with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Jaishankar conveyed a similar message. “Spoke with US @SecRubio this evening. Deeply appreciate US commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism. Underlined India’s targeted and measured response to cross-border terrorism. Will firmly counter any attempts at escalation,” he added.
The diplomatic engagements come in the wake of Pakistan’s coordinated missile and drone strikes on Indian territory, including attempts in Jammu, which were largely thwarted by India’s air defence systems. The attacks significantly escalated border tensions on Thursday evening.
Earlier, during an official visit by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Jaishankar addressed the broader context of India’s response. Referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, he said, “You are visiting India at a time when we are responding to a particularly barbaric terrorist attack on 22nd April in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This attack compelled us to respond on 7th May by striking at the cross-border terrorist infrastructure. Our response was targeted and measured. It is not our intention to escalate the situation.”
He further added, “However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will be met with a very, very firm response. As a neighbour and close partner, you must have a good understanding of the situation. Once again, a very warm welcome.”
Jaishankar’s statements reflect India’s intent to remain restrained yet resolute in its national security decisions while engaging actively with the international community to maintain regional stability.
