India has committed its entire support to Thailand and Myanmar after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the country on Friday and killed dozens while destroying properties everywhere. Prime Minister Narendra Modi committed instant aid as rescue operations are ongoing in the affected region.

PM Modi’s Commitment to Assistance

The PM, while posting on X (previously Twitter), lamented the tragic incident and sent out the intent of India in helping neighbors in need.

“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, we asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he stated.

Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

The quake hit central Myanmar at 12:50 PM (local time) on Friday, with the epicenter 16 km northwest of the city of Sagaing at a depth of 10 km, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. A powerful aftershock of 6.8 magnitude shook the area further, aggravating the destruction.

Several buildings have fallen, roads were destroyed, and rescue teams have been sent to determine the full scale of casualties and damage. Although the number of victims is still unknown, preliminary reports confirm extensive destruction in both nations. Luckily, no tsunami alert has been issued.

Tremors Felt in India

The effects of the earthquake were not confined to Myanmar and Thailand, as tremors were experienced in various Indian cities, such as Kolkata and Imphal. People reported shaking buildings and ran out of their homes in panic. The Indian authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and have alerted disaster response teams.

Viral Footage Captures Skyscraper Collapse

An appalling video on social media captures an unfinished skyscraper in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district collapsing under the quake’s effect. Media reports say that 43 people are trapped inside and rescue is under way quickly.

With its centuries-old tradition of providing disaster relief to the surrounding nations, India is ready to send aid and emergency response teams as and when required. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is in touch with Myanmar and Thailand at all times to coordinate relief efforts.
