In a dramatic heightening of tensions in the region, Pakistan has accused India of preparing a military attack on Islamabad within the next 24 to 36 hours. Based on “credible intelligence,” Pakistan warned New Delhi that any such move would trigger “catastrophic” repercussions throughout the region and beyond.

Pakistan Accuses India of Fabricating Allegations

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that Indian forces were getting ready to engage in military action based on “baseless and concocted allegations” about Pakistan’s suspected involvement in the killing of 26 people in a terror attack on Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir.

“India is playing judge, jury and executioner,” Tarar declared. “Being a responsible state, Pakistan open heartedly offered a credible, transparent and independent investigation by a neutral commission of experts to ascertain the truth,” he said, reaffirming that Pakistan itself has long a victim of terrorism.

Tarar reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He appealed to the international community to “remain alive to the reality that the onus of escalatory spiral and its ensuing consequences shall squarely lie with India.”

India Gives Forces Freedom of Operations to Strike Back

The statement followed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-level meeting with the top defence brass, where he granted the armed forces “complete operational freedom” to choose the “mode, targets, and timing” of India’s response to the Pahalgam attack, according to government sources cited by PTI.

Modi had previously stated that India would “identify, track, and punish” the perpetrators of the attack at Baisaran meadow, promising to pursue them to the “ends of the earth.”

Diplomatic Fallout and Border Clashes Escalate

At the same time, the Indian government has also taken a series of tough steps following the terror attack. These are the expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, cancellation of all visas given to Pakistani citizens since April 27, and the immediate closure of the Attari land-transit post.

Ceasefire violations along the Line of Control persisted for a sixth consecutive day on Tuesday as Indian troops retaliated against unprovoked firing by Pakistani posts, further raising fears of open conflict.
