The Border Security Force (BSF) has been given operational autonomy to deal with any provocation from Pakistan at the international frontier, top government sources indicated on Saturday. The move indicates a hardening of Indian security forces’ attitude in the wake of recent developments.

‘Response Will Be Measured and Timely’: Officials
According to those close to the development, BSF officials now have full freedom to counter cross-border provocations without pre-clearance. But the retaliation will be proportionate and calibrated.
“The response will be proportionate and appropriate,” the sources said, reflecting that India’s response is still held back but not weakening.
Comes Amid Tensions Despite Ceasefire Agreement
The development follows in the background of an elusive ceasefire arrangement between India and Pakistan. As the two countries just made public promises to freeze hostilities, recent disturbances along with news reports of explosions cast doubt on the ceasefire.
Authorization of the BSF with enhanced freedom is interpreted as a decision aimed at bringing confidence that the border troops of India can work efficiently in response to any aggressiveness or any violations of a ceasefire.
Interest Lies in Sovereignty and Safety
Sources also indicated that the move is a reaffirmation of India’s resolve to defend its borders and its national sovereignty. The BSF has also been directed to be more vigilant and react strongly to any attempts at infiltration or unprovoked firing.
No Reconsideration of National Security
Officials averred that even as India continues to stand by peace and ceasefire agreements, any attempt to attack its territorial integrity will get a firm and well-choreographed response.
